The German Experience

Extensive bioenergy project development has occurred across Europe and is now a mature market.  Anaerobic digestion technologies have achieved considerable market penetration for organic waste management and renewable power generation applications across Europe.  Germany, in particular, has experienced unprecedented bioenergy project growth due to targeted progressive government policies, regulatory and market signals to encourage renewable energy and enhanced organic waste management.  There are over 3,500 biogas plants of varying size and scale operating in Germany alone, providing over 1,000 megawatts of renewable base-load power generation capacity.
